Uruguay: beach, crutches, uno, sealions and hippies

23 november 2018 - Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay

It has been a while… so lets start were we left.

Arriving in Punte del Diablo. The hostel was amazing just meters from the beach and you could hear the sea in your bed. As I had a lot of things to organise and did not feel great with the flu i decided to stay for a few days and take it easy. I met some guys that were travelling on the motorbike and we got on well. So after some laptop time and some phone calls I decided it was time for a walk on the beach, Moon (one of the guys) decided to come and wow what a nice beach it was, completely deserted beach, so beautyfull😊

When we were almost back at the hostel and crossing some rocks it went all wrong… I twisted my ancle on the left (this happens more often and I am not even that bothered by it) but I tried to correct with my right foot and my big toe did something funny. It hurted very bad. So moon was my human crutch back to the hostel. After a shower i put some ice on it and i was offered some whiskey, so it was not so bad. But when I tried to sleep I kept waking up as I was in so much pain, at one point I was crying and I was already on the limit of paracetamol. It felt like the pain i felt after some of the operations i had. As soon as the people from the hostel were awake I went downstairs and asked if there was a hospital close by. As soon as they realized the state of my foot they started organising things and a few hours later I was in the car with moon and our driver/ translator Paul. The doctorspost in Punta del dialblo looked at my foot and drew the same conclusion as us, i needed x-rays which they did not have. So off we went again to a town 50 km away, keeping fingers crossed that they would have a x-ray. Otherwise it was getting a serious problem, next place was than going to be montevideo 200 km away!!! But to my luck there was an x-ray in the place we went to, they looked at me and my foot and within 10 minutes I was seen by a doctor who straight away ordered x -rays. Now is medical care in Uruguay free but i did have to pay for the x-rays, so moon and paul went to arrange this. In the mean time i was put in a wheelchair, when they had the piece of paper they took the x-rays. To everybodies surprise it was not broken but heavenly concussed. The doctor advised me to rest and not walk on it for 5 to 7 days, use crutches and painkillers. They decided to give me drip with morfine, but that didn t go so well, my bloodpressure dropped very quickly so i almost fainted. So when we could finally go I was glad, with my crutches, diclofenac and omeprazol back to the hostel and get some sleep. My foot was so swollen it was all shiny and red and i could not even move my ancle. The rest of the week I was sitting in the hostel looking and listening to the sea, stoned of the painkillers. Surrounded by nice people that took shopping for me, helped me cook, made me cups of tea and played games with me. And meeting interesting people like a german family they were backpacking with an 11 month old boy and a 5 year old girl. So inspiring and cool.

After 5 days i was off the painkillers and tried to move around bits. But in day 6 the weather was really really nice so they helped me get to the beach and into the sea I was so happy to have a change of scenery and returned with a big smile that made everyone laugh😊 As some of you will not be surprised with of course I went to quick in doing things and I had to slow down again. But on day 10 I decided to move to the next place and with some help I managed. They dropped me off at the busstation and there i met a brazilian couple that was going the same direction and they helped me with my bag which was really nice.

Cobo Polonia was the next destination, a little community with hippies and local fisherman. Some years ago the whole area was declared national park, so you can only enter it with big 4 x4 trucks that are waiting for you at the entrance of the park. The drive there and the area are beautyfull. In the hostel I met my brazilian friend again, I met her in Punta del Diablo, so that was nice. The hostel was very small but relaxed and a good vibe.

After Cabo Polonia I moved on to La Pedrera, just 30 km down the road also on the beach. The hostel was very nice and we were with maybe 7 people but all getting along and the weather was beautyfull (main reason i wanted to spent another day at a beach destination). Here I met Alicia from Sweden and she was going to Colonia del Sacramento the next day and I could come with her, which was great news for my foot. We got on very well and had great conversations and a good laugh.

Colonia del Sacramento has a lot of history and big parts of the old town still exist, so the next day i went of exploring. See the pictures to get the idea. But walked way to much and my foot was not happy☹ Back in the hostel a girl from Argentina arrived in my dorm and when we got talking i found out she was there as there was going to be a big salsa competition that weekend and she was one of the competitors. This had nothing to do with salsa like i knew it, so a whole new world opened up to me. This was more like a battle like you see in hip hop, she would not know what music she would get and she had to dance 45 seconds that the other person 45 seconds and than again both people.

To my surprise another guy was also staying in the hostel for that reason and they decided to give a demonstration for me, soo cool…

The next day I took the ferry to Buenos Aires and said goodbye to Uruguay

So much is always happening to you...it's amazing :-) And you are meeting lot's of special people along the way! Here Autumn has seriously set in, lots of rain and windy weather this weekend, cats are just out for a little walk in the back garden. I am off to my Saturday morning yoga class but will stay in for the rest of the weekend with a heap of nice books on the couch... Take care, love, Essa
